First Things First

Have you ever thought much about whom or what should come first in your life? For some, it may be their family, yet others may say their job, and still others may say themselves. In reality, it’s “none of the above.” God should take the utmost priority in our lives. He’s either Lord of all or not Lord at all. When we put God first, the rest of our lives seem to fall into place. We should put God first, then our spouse, then children, and then our job or profession. When we prioritize God, He is able to help, lead and guide our lives. There are many that have been taught that “family comes first”. The Bible actually teaches us that to love God and love our families a little less than God. Today, it’s the opposite. In Luke 14:26 Jesus says, “…you cannot be my disciple if you don’t ‘hate’ your family.” What Jesus was teaching was that you must love God more and put him first in order to be a true follower. Let’s give God and His Word the proper position in our lives.

Making Changes

Making changes in our lives usually happens when we get sick and tired of our results, or we see a real need for it. Change is sometimes difficult for people because we do something one way for so long it becomes a habit, and then we have to re-think that behavior and have to decide to make a conscious decision to move out of our routine.

There are a couple of things we can do to help ourselves in our life, our thought life and how we behave. The first one is disgust; this happens when we become sick and tired of being sick and tired. This is when change can occur. Another one is desire. This is when you have a longing for something and you take action towards achieving that goal. When we come to that point, anything is possible. It will take work and a decision of your will with no other option. But with God’s help and His Word, we can make the necessary changes that can have a profound and positive effect on our lives. Go ahead and begin today. Make a change.

Persistence Pays Off

Sometimes in life, when life happens and things aren’t going well, the only thing we have left to do is persevere. Whether it’s a business, marriage, or a workplace situation, we need to keep going forward and hang in there. We must learn to weather the storm and never quit. Quitters never win or succeed. Those that persevere, keep going, and keep pushing look for ways to make it work and obtain the prize. So many people have a habit of quitting and giving up as soon as they encounter an obstacle. They see obstacles as a “no” or too hard to overcome. Webster’s Dictionary defines persevere as “to continue in some effort, course of action, or pursuit in spite of difficulty or opposition”. We should adjust our attitude by attaining perseverance instead of quitting. Some quit way too soon and this is a reason why for some of us, nothing seems to work out. It’s not that things couldn’t work out, it’s that sometimes people quit on a dream, a job, or a marriage way too soon. Let’s purpose to develop habits that will help us, not defeat us.

Your Secret Strength

As long as you have breath, there will be opportunities to be offended as people and circumstances hurt us. The question then becomes, “What do I do when those situations arise?” First of all, we need to learn to forgive and not hang on to those offenses. Forgiveness is not about a feeling as much as it is a choice or decision of our will. Forgiveness is not restoration either; they are two different things. If I choose to forgive someone, it is independent of them. It’s about me making sure I do the right thing. Forgiveness frees us from that person or thing and allows us to move on in life. Unforgiveness stifles us in life and causes us to stop progressing. Studies show that forgiving yourself and others helps depression. We must choose by an act of our will to forgive, no matter what. Forgiveness is about what you do, not what someone else does. Gandhi once said, “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong”. Let go of offenses and hurts today and allow peace to fill your heart and mind so that you can move forward in your life.

Bad Information

Tuesday, August 21, 2012 4:11 PM

False expectations are destructive and have led many people to ruin. It happens when you believe something that’s not true or based on bad information. When we expect something to happen and it doesn’t, it could ruin us and cause us to go down a slippery slope. If you believe God should help you just because you’re a “good person”, you’re really setting yourself up for failure; the result of which can be a controlling and critical attitude. This will cause you and those close to you to be unhappy. The underlying thought, “If I can control the situation, then I can control those involved and thus prevent myself from getting hurt” is manipulating. We sometimes can’t control ourselves, much less other people. Then, people won’t want to be around us and will likely view us as unlikeable. Our outlook on life will grow dim; we will lose hope, and develop a pessimistic view of life. Let’s seek truth and get all the facts, and make sure what we believe is true. Don’t allow your attitude to turn sour based on bad information.
