Mark 7:13 NKJV — “making the word of God of no effect through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

Jesus looked the Pharisees dead in the eye and told them their tradition had canceled out the Word of God. They kept all the religious language. They kept the rituals. But somewhere along the way they had built a system that let them skip what God actually said and still feel righteous doing it. That should stop every one of us in our tracks. You can be religious and still be disobedient. You can know your Bible verses and still be living outside of them because tradition gave you an exit ramp.

We do the same thing today; we just dress it up differently. Some people have turned “grace” into a word that means God never expects anything from them. Some churches have swapped repentance for therapy language, so sin gets rebranded as a struggle nobody has to actually put down. Others let culture write the rules on marriage, money, or morality, then go looking for a verse to justify what they already decided to do. None of that looks like rebellion on the surface. It looks reasonable. It looks nice. But it is the same trick the Pharisees pulled, just wearing modern clothes.

Here is the only way through it. Let God’s Word have the final vote, not your comfort, not your culture, not what your family always did, not what feels loving in the moment. Tradition can be good when it points people to Scripture. It becomes poison the second it starts replacing Scripture. Check your life against the Book, not the other way around.
